On a stiff problem an explicit solver takes hundreds of times the steps
On Robertson's problem Dormand-Prince takes 34,537 steps, Radau IIA 78 and BDF 144, and all three end within of the reference.

- Full statement
- On Robertson's stiff kinetics problem over at rtol , the explicit Dormand-Prince method needs more than 30,000 steps, between 300 and 600 times as many as Radau IIA and over 100 times as many as BDF (both under 200 steps), while all three end within of the reference . Stability, and with it the step count, sets the explicit method's step at this tolerance. The ratio is far below the spread of the rate constants (0.04 to ).
- Scope
- The interval , rtol and atol for all three methods, with the analytic Jacobian for Radau and BDF. Over the full range to the explicit method's count would be larger still; it is not run there.
- Reference
- Robertson's chemical kinetics problem with rate constants 0.04, and (Hairer and Wanner, Solving Ordinary Differential Equations II (2nd ed., 1996), section IV.1); its Jacobian's eigenvalues reach about near and stay large in magnitude, which bounds an explicit method's step by stability, not accuracy. lib/ode's Radau, BDF and Dormand-Prince take the steps SciPy's solve_ivp takes (lib/ode/bench_scipy.json).
