Nuclear spin-orbit splitting rivals the shell gap
In oxygen-16 the splitting is 6.2 MeV, 40% of the shell gap; in hydrogen fine structure is of the gap.

- Full statement
- In oxygen-16 with the SLy5 Skyrme force (Viv's Hartree-Fock on a 0.1 fm radial mesh), the spin-orbit splitting of the shell is about 6.2 MeV for neutrons and 6.1 MeV for protons, between 30% and 50% (about 40%) of the gap from the to the level, while in hydrogen the fine-structure splitting from the Dirac formula is eV, about of the to gap (below ). Spin-orbit coupling is a leading term in nuclear shell structure and a correction of order in a light atom.
- Scope
- One nucleus and one force; the size of the nuclear splitting depends on the force's spin-orbit strength (126 MeV fm in SLy5), and the measured 1p splitting in oxygen-16 (about 6 MeV) is not part of the check. The atomic side is the Dirac point-nucleus model, which leaves out the Lamb shift, hyperfine structure and the reduced-mass correction. Heavier atoms have larger fine structure (it grows as ).
