- Full statement
- For the neutral atoms to 18 in the local density approximation (dftatom, LDA with VWN correlation), the virial ratio exceeds 2 by between 0.001 and 0.05 (4.9% for hydrogen down to 0.19% for argon), shrinking at every step in . The same runs reproduce NIST's LDA total energies to within hartree on every atom, inside NIST's rounding, so the departure comes from the model.
- Scope
- Neutral atoms Z = 1 to 18 (hydrogen to argon) in NIST's ground configurations, nonrelativistic LDA with VWN correlation, dftatom's default mesh (6,000 points to 50 bohr) and tolerances. V is everything but the kinetic energy (Hartree, electron-nucleus, exchange-correlation). The expected cause, LDA correlation's departure from homogeneous scaling (Levy and Perdew), is not isolated here by an exchange-only run.
